September marks the start of a lot of things. Schools go back in, autumn arrives, prime time TV shows premiere and for football clubs, it marks the start of a new season. At Hackney Laces, this is our first season where we’re playing in proper leagues and we’re terribly excited. We’ve had nearly two years of preparing and lots of friendly matches along the way. But now we mean business.
On the weekend our U16s, who are part of the Capital Girls league had their season opener against Hampstead FC. If enthusiasm was a measure of score, we’d have won bigtime. However, it is not and we know that now. But it certainly helps.
We had 9 players to take on Hampstead’s squad of 11 and our girls ran their socks off. Well done Gemma, Fahdi, Darcey, Deana, Melissa, Kasia, Sherena, Amara and Keira for a stellar first match. Also, thank you toRachel who came along to support us whilst she heals from an injury.
Our newly formed women’s team got off to an great start in their match on Sunday in the Greater London Women’s Football league against Old Actonian Reserves. Jenny scored an incredible goal within the first minute boosting everyones belief in the team. Then a few minutes later, winger Chloe delivered a lovely ball into Jenny who effortlessly volleyed it into the back of the net. The next goal came from Eunice who dribbled all the way from our own 18-yard box to their goal, out-skilling every player she passed. Tamia also scored a cracking goal, landing the ball in the top left hand corner.
In this match we learned how to do proper throw-ins, after getting called out on six foul throws. We also learned that even when a score line is 4-1 at half-time, anything can happen. In this case, our opposition worked very hard and scored three goals in the second half of the match. Thankfully, Jenny got her third goal of the game, securing us the win – and three points in the league table.
Excellent performances came from the whole squad: Lottie (our fearless keeper); Emma, Aneequa, Rosemary, Hashley, Begay, Eunice, Tamia, Jenny, Sarah, Katee, Chloe, Nysheal and Marigona.
If you’d like to come and support, our next matches are home games. U16s at Mabley Green on Saturday 14th September at 10am and Women’s at Hackney Marshes on Sunday 15th September at 2pm.
Bring on the new season!
